About Us

Principal/Head Teacher John Carstensen

Qualifications: B Soc Sc, MA (Hons), Dip Tch, RSA CELTA, Dip SLT.

Experience: John has been teaching English to high school students and adults for many years, mostly to Asian students, mostly in New Zealand, but also in China, Indonesia, and Scotland, at the University of Edinburgh.

He is an IELTS examiner and his work has also included training other English teachers.

Our staff are all certified CELTA or TESOL teachers.

Due to demand, we have set up this unique English School as a vibrant alternative to larger city institutions. We are the only International English School in the East Coast region.

As a student in a small school, you will receive individual attention and support, and your English learning experience will be enhanced through genuine friendships and close interaction with local native English speakers.

Our Philosophy:

We aim to provide all our students with an enjoyable learning experience. We use modern communicative language teaching methods with an emphasis on speaking and interaction with other students in an active and relaxed classroom environment.

We are here to help you to improve your English as much as possible and also help you to experience NZ culture through recreational activities and interaction with the local community.

Gisborne English Language School is in the centre of the city, 50m from the main street (Gladstone Road), surrounded by shops, cafes and food outlets. A short walk to the riverbank, and 15min walk to the beach.

The Public Library is only 100m away

Variety of food outlets:

Within a 2 minute walk from the school you can have a choice of Chinese, Thai, Indian, and Japanese food, and takeaways like McDonalds and KFC are also nearby.
